The Power of Pilates

There is a little madness in the Pilates Method, with its contraption-like equipment, straps and boxes, levers and sliding seats. But the movements are quite simple and highly effective for encouraging a tremendous amount of core strength, flexibility, balance and body awareness. The practice can benefit everyone from a top tier athlete to post-operation rehab patients. In the following pages, Bellevue Club member Doug Trimble and Pilates instructor Nancy Black demonstrate the beauty of the Pilates process.


Snake Twist:
Strengthens arms, abdominals, back and shoulders; stretches hamstrings


Balance Control Push-Ups:
Strengthens arms, core, back and glutes; challenges balance


The Teaser:
Strengthens abdominals; challenges balance


Tricep Balance Control:
Strengthens arms, core; challenges balance


Instructor Nancy Black teaches Pilates mat classes at the following times:
